Opuntia engelmanni (n.1 shovel) 15-25 cm, cactus, winter hard succulent plant, resistant up to -20 C
OPUNTIA ENGELMANNII (N.1 PALA) 15-25 cm, CACTUS, WINTER HARD SUCKY PLANT, RESISTANT UP TO -20°C
OPUNTIA ENGELMANNII (n.1 shovel) from 15 to 25 cm long, winter hard, resistant up to -20°C exposed to external bad weather (rain, snow and frost).
The size of the blade indicated is an average size, there may be variations in length both in excess and in defect. The growth of the blades is not regular and even less constant, it varies from year to year and depends on various factors among which the predominant ones are the weather conditions, the quantity of water received and the insolation.
The shovel is sold without the root; it is a cutting ready to be planted which, thanks to its particular longevity, roots very quickly.
If you want to shelter the plant during the winter months, to ensure better conservation, it is advisable to cover it with a simple sheet of white "non-woven fabric" resting on the plant or on a scaffolding built around it.
The cold is not a real problem for this species as opposed to humidity which can ruin it a lot.
To overcome the humidity problem it is advisable to plant the cutting in a very drained soil, mainly made up of pumice (of various granulometry), perlite, dolomite and marble to fortify and give color to the thorns and specific slow release fertilizers. In its shop, Geosism & Nature offers PROFESSIONAL SOIL FOR OUTDOOR SUCCULENT PLANTS (CACTUS-SUCCULENTS) (LUGNAN SOIL) in 30 kg bags, ready and calibrated specifically for these species.
It would be advisable to place the plant in a raised flower bed with respect to the surrounding ground, placing coarse pumice (6/14 mm) on the bottom to increase drainage while around the plant it is necessary to use the aforementioned Lugnan soil.
In the second photograph that we propose, it is possible to admire an adult specimen in an open garden in which the drainage conditions described have been recreated.
