This book is a guide to growing, maintaining and shaping Satsuki bonsai (Rhododendron Indicum) and features fifty of the most common varieties. The author of this book covers practical skills for growing bonsai. It starts from the basic treatment techniques of the Bonsai (e.g. spring repotting, post-flowering pruning), and introduces the advanced techniques of grafting and styling of the Bonsai. There are many images highlighting trees of particular quality selected over several years.
The Satsuki plant (Rhododendron Indicum) is classified as a genus of the Azalea family. Satsuki trees have grown in Japanese gardens throughout history. They are strong plants and therefore a great choice for beginners in the art of bonsai. Satsuki bonsai are found in many areas of Japan. There are approximately 3,000 known varieties of Satsuki trees that vary in size, shape, and color.
One difference between Satsuki and Azaleas is the flowering season. Some azaleas begin flowering in early spring, but satsukis bloom in late spring. Also, new azalea shoots and shoots grow after flowering, but new Satsuki shoots grow before flowering. Compared to azaleas, Satsukis have small leaves and their flowers have 5 petals and a great variety of shapes and colors.
This book provides the reader with sufficient techniques for growing Satsuki bonsai, and is suitable for both beginners and bonsai veterans.
